Where it came from
The Hourglass of Summer, known in Japan as Natsu no Loto, originated as a two-episode original video animation released in 2004 by Studio KSS. The production serves as an adaptation of the visual novel created by G.O. and Princess Soft, capturing the melancholy and supernatural tone of the original interactive narrative which centers on a young man navigating lost memories and the weight of past regrets during a lingering summer.
The animation design focuses on the aesthetic hallmarks of early 2000s romance visual novels, emphasizing soft lighting and character-driven drama. While Studio KSS was known for adapting a variety of adult-oriented games during this era, the adaptation of The Hourglass of Summer sought to translate the game's more poignant emotional beats into a linear story, meeting with a niche but appreciative reception among fans of contemporary Japanese adventure titles.
