Where it came from
The 2013 promotional video for Land of the Lustrous, or Houseki no Kuni, was produced by Studio Hibari to generate interest in Haruko Ichikawa's manga series. Released to coincide with the publication of the second volume, the short piece served as a proof of concept for adapting the series' distinct, crystalline aesthetic into an animated format, showcasing the challenges of rendering translucent, refractive characters in motion.
The production utilized a blend of traditional 2D character designs and 3D computer-generated elements, reflecting the early industry experimentation with hybrid animation techniques for manga promotion. While the video was primarily a marketing tool intended to increase awareness among potential readers, it received significant attention from the fan community for its attempt to capture the ethereal visual language of Ichikawa's work long before the full-length television series was greenlit by studio Orange.
