Where it came from
How I Attended an All-Guy's Mixer, or 'Goukon ni Ittara Onna ga Inakatta Hanashi', originated as a popular manga series by Nana Aokawa before being adapted into an original net animation in 2024 by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan. The story centers on a college student who is invited to a mixer, only to discover that the other participants are cross-dressing men, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings and social dynamics that explore contemporary tropes of gender expression and romance.
The production sought to maintain the lighthearted, character-driven aesthetic of the original manga while navigating the comedic timing inherent in its premise. Directed by Kazuomi Koga and animated with a focus on vibrant, expressive character designs, the project was received as a distinct entry in the romantic comedy genre, noted for its emphasis on camaraderie and the subversion of traditional group-dating expectations.
