Where it came from
Released in 2019 by the studio Bomb! Cute! Bomb!, How to Build a Magnificent Nation serves as an experimental original video animation (OVA) that reflects the studio's niche reputation for blending stylized, surrealist aesthetics with sharp, satirical commentary on sociopolitical structures. The production emerged from the studio's interest in deconstructing the 'nation-building' genre, aiming to frame statecraft through a playful yet cynical lens that prioritizes visual flair over traditional narrative linearities.
The animation design was spearheaded by the studio's core creative team, who utilized a distinct, high-contrast color palette and minimalist character geometry intended to evoke mid-century propaganda art juxtaposed with modern digital glitch aesthetics. Upon its limited release, the work was received by enthusiasts as a curiosity, noted primarily for its unconventional pacing and its bold commitment to its underlying absurdist premise rather than conventional world-building tropes.
