Hozuki's Coolheadedness

Hozuki's Coolheadedness, or Hozuki no Reitetsu, began as a manga series by Natsumi Eguchi before being adapted into an anime series by Wit Studio in 2014. The narrative serves as a dark comedy centered on the daily life of Hozuki, the capable but stern chief deputy to King Enma, the ruler of the Japanese hell. Produced during a period when Wit Studio was gaining significant momentum, the series was designed to blend traditional Japanese folklore with modern workplace satire, creating a unique aesthetic that balances mythological gravity with mundane administrative humor.

The visual direction for the adaptation was managed by Kazuhiro Yoneda, who aimed to preserve the distinct, ink-wash inspired look of Eguchi’s original illustrations. The production team focused on a subdued, atmospheric palette to reflect the underworld setting, punctuated by slapstick sequences that emphasize the absurdity of bureaucratic tasks in the afterlife. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its witty dialogue and unconventional approach to the supernatural genre, eventually spawning multiple seasons and specials that cemented its status as a cult favorite in the dark comedy category.
