Where it came from
Hua Jianghu: Buliang Ren, produced by the Beijing-based studio Rocen, debuted as a pioneering 3D animated web series in 2014. Set during the transition between the Tang and Five Dynasties periods, the narrative follows a young orphan caught in the political conspiracies of the Buliang Ren, an intelligence agency operating under the emperor. The project was designed to modernize traditional wuxia storytelling, utilizing high-fidelity motion capture and 3D rendering to bring complex martial arts choreography to the digital medium.
The series was conceived to expand the influence of Chinese animation within the domestic market, blending historical fiction with fantasy elements. Upon release, it was lauded for its ambition and technical evolution, becoming a touchstone for the 'guoman' movement. Its aesthetic choices, characterized by intricate character armor and stylized, dramatic combat sequences, reflected a broader industry shift toward serialized, high-production-value 3D content tailored for online streaming platforms.
