Where it came from
Huaguo Shan Zhuan, or The Legend of Mount Huaguo, is a web-based animated production developed by NetEase. It serves as a creative reimagining of the iconic folklore surrounding Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, drawing deeply from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The project was conceived during a period of significant growth for Chinese animation, as studios sought to leverage advanced CGI and digital storytelling techniques to modernize traditional cultural IP for a new generation of digital-native viewers.
The visual design of the ONA prioritizes a high-fidelity aesthetic, blending mythological themes with contemporary character animation styles. Produced by NetEase, the series was designed to showcase the studio's technical capabilities in rendering fluid, action-oriented sequences that remain faithful to the spirit of the original legend. While it operates within a highly competitive landscape of adaptations, the series was produced to establish a distinct, stylized interpretation that emphasizes the landscape and mystical heritage of Mount Huaguo.
