HUMAN LOST

Human Lost was produced by Polygon Pictures and released in 2019 as a reimagining of Osamu Dazai’s classic 1948 novel No Longer Human. The project was conceived as a high-concept science fiction adaptation, transporting the original themes of alienation and social detachment into a dystopian, near-future version of Tokyo where death has been eradicated by nanotechnology. The film served as a showcase for the studio's proficiency in 3D computer-generated animation, aiming to blend traditional anime aesthetics with fluid, modern digital rendering.

The creative direction was led by director Fuminori Kizaki, known for his work on Afro Samurai, and featured screenplay contributions from novelist Tow Ubukata. The character designs were handled by Yusuke Kozaki, who sought to give the cast a distinct, sharp silhouette that stood out against the dark, cybernetic environment. Upon release, the film garnered attention for its ambitious visual identity and its attempt to modernize a canonical piece of Japanese literature, though critics remained divided on how effectively the philosophical weight of Dazai's narrative translated into the high-octane action format.
