Humanity Has Declined Specials

Humanity Has Declined, known in Japan as Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, originated as a series of light novels by Romeo Tanaka. The 2012 anime adaptation, produced by studio AIC A.S.T.A., was notable for its surreal aesthetic and cynical, dark humor hidden beneath a pastel-colored visual style. These special episodes were released as bonus content alongside the home video releases, serving as short-form extensions of the series' satirical exploration of a post-collapse society where humans coexist with diminutive, enigmatic creatures called Fairies.

The production sought to maintain the high-concept, non-linear storytelling that defined the main series. By focusing on vignettes that highlight the eccentricities of the Fairies and the protagonist’s pragmatic, somewhat detached worldview, the specials effectively capture the unique tone established by director Seiji Kishi. They were well-received by fans of the series for retaining the show's distinct visual identity and thematic depth, providing further insight into the bizarre logic of its world.
