Hunter x Hunter: Yorknew City

The Yorknew City arc of Hunter x Hunter was adapted as a series of OVAs in 2002 by Nippon Animation, following the conclusion of their 1999 television series. These episodes continue the narrative established in Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga, focusing on the Phantom Troupe’s auction heist and the resulting confrontation with Kurapika. The production sought to maintain the dark, gritty aesthetic of the original 1999 anime adaptation while elevating the animation quality to accommodate the intense, high-stakes combat sequences inherent to the arc.

The design and tone were heavily influenced by the transition from television broadcast to the home video market, allowing for slightly more graphic portrayals of the story’s violent themes. While the 1999 series became a cult classic for its atmospheric direction and faithful character development, these OVAs are particularly regarded for their focused pacing. Critics and fans often point to this arc as the high point of the 1999 production, citing the psychological tension and the sharp contrast between the characters' motivations as hallmarks of the adaptation’s lasting appeal.
