Where it came from
Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge was produced by the renowned studio Madhouse and released in 2013 as the first feature-length film in the Hunter x Hunter franchise. It was conceived to expand upon the series' popularity following the 2011 anime reboot, focusing on a narrative centered around the character Kurapika and his quest for vengeance against the Phantom Troupe. The film serves as a standalone story that incorporates elements of the manga's original lore while exploring a specific backstory regarding Kurapika's eyes.
The film was directed by Yuzo Sato, who aimed to translate the intricate action sequences and intense emotional stakes of Yoshihiro Togashi’s original work onto the big screen. While it featured high production values and familiar character designs from the Madhouse television series, it received a mixed critical reception. Many fans appreciated the expanded character development for Kurapika, though some critics felt the film's pacing and narrative cohesion did not fully capture the complexity typically found in the core series arcs.
