Where it came from
Hyakka Zukan emerged from the independent studio Fever Creations, serving as a distinct entry in the experimental animation scene. The film was conceived during a period of rising interest in non-linear, visually dense storytelling, aiming to translate the intricate botanical and mythological classifications of its namesake—the Hundred Flower Illustrated Manual—into a kinetic, cinematic language.
The visual design prioritizes hand-drawn textures and fluid transitions, intended by the production team to evoke the feeling of flipping through a living, breathing archive. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics for its atmospheric restraint and unconventional pacing, positioning it as a niche yet respected contribution to modern independent animation.
