I am Nezha

I am Nezha, released in 2019, is a feature-length computer-animated film produced by Beijing Enlight Pictures and directed by Jiaozi. The film reinterprets the classical Chinese mythological figure Nezha, transforming him from a traditional hero into a misunderstood, rebellious youth. This modernization was part of a larger trend in Chinese cinema to revitalize folklore through high-end 3D animation, aiming to resonate with contemporary audiences by exploring themes of destiny and identity.

The character design was a deliberate departure from the iconic 1979 version, opting for a darker, more defiant aesthetic that emphasized the protagonist's internal struggle. The film received widespread critical acclaim within China and internationally for its visual ambition and emotional depth. It became a significant cultural phenomenon, marking a turning point in the commercial and critical success of the domestic animation industry.
