Where it came from
I, Tsushima originated as a popular manga series by Okuropan, which garnered a devoted following for its humorous and somewhat cynical depiction of a stray cat’s perspective on human interactions. The ONA adaptation was produced in 2021 by Asmik Ace and Fanworks, aiming to translate the manga's distinct, scratchy art style into an animated format that maintained the original's dry, observational wit.
The animation direction leaned into a minimalist, storyboard-like aesthetic to emphasize the manga’s unique character designs and comedic timing. Directed by Jun Aoki, the project was received as a quirky departure from traditional high-budget anime, finding success by leaning into the relatable, self-important nature of its feline protagonist, Tsushima, who believes he is the center of the world.
