Where it came from
If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die, known in Japan as Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu, began as a manga series by Auri Hirao serialized in Monthly Comic Ryū starting in 2015. The story serves as an earnest, comedic exploration of the 'otaku' subculture, focusing on the intense, parasocial relationship between Eripiyo, a dedicated fan, and Maina, the least popular member of the underground idol group ChamJam.
The 2020 anime adaptation was produced by studio 8-bit and directed by Yusuke Yamamoto. The studio aimed to capture the manga's specific blend of humor and genuine emotional investment in idol fandom, utilizing a character-driven approach that prioritizes the fans' perspectives over the glamour of the stage. The series was well-received for its realistic and empathetic portrayal of fan devotion, standing out as a grounded entry in the musical and idol genre.
