Where it came from
If I See You in My Dreams, known in Japan as Yume de Aetara, originated as a manga series by Tatsuya Norihira before being adapted into this three-episode original video animation series by studio J.C.Staff in 1998. The project was conceived during a period when the studio was actively developing character-driven romantic dramas, aiming to capture a nostalgic and bittersweet tone that differentiated it from the more action-oriented anime common to the late nineties.
The animation design focuses on the evolving emotional connection between the protagonist, a salaryman, and a mysterious woman who appears to him through telepathic dreaming. Directed by Kitaro Kosaka, the production was noted for its polished, grounded aesthetic, moving away from hyper-stylized visuals to prioritize subtle character acting and atmospheric cityscapes. It was well-received by fans of the adult-oriented romance genre for its restrained storytelling and evocative musical score.
