Where it came from
I'll/CKBC is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) released in 2002, adapted from the manga series I'll by Hiroyuki Asada. Produced by Aniplex and animation studio Radix, the project sought to translate Asada's distinctively stylish and atmospheric art style into motion. The story centers on the intense rivalry and friendship between two high school basketball players, Akane Tachibana and Hitonari Hiiragi, focusing less on the mechanics of the sport and more on the emotional development and personal conflicts of the characters.
The production is noted for its attempt to capture the moody, character-driven aesthetic that defined Asada's print work. Unlike many contemporary sports anime that emphasize high-octane match sequences, this adaptation prioritizes a somber, deliberate pace to match the source material’s tone. While it remains a cult item for fans of the manga, it is frequently cited for its visual departure from mainstream animation trends of the early 2000s, reflecting a specific period of experimentation in OVA storytelling.
