Where it came from
I'm Gonna Be an Angel!, released in 1999, stands as a distinct entry in the magical girl genre produced by Studio Pierrot. Directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori with character designs by Mariko Oka, the series sought to infuse the traditional high-stakes tropes of the genre with a more whimsical, comedy-driven narrative. The story centers on Yuusuke, a young boy who becomes entangled in the life of an angel named Noelle, following a chance encounter that disrupts his ordinary existence.
The production is often noted for its departure from the more dramatic or action-oriented magical girl shows that dominated the late nineties. By prioritizing lighthearted interactions and a softer aesthetic, Studio Pierrot aimed to provide a comforting, low-stakes viewing experience. Upon its original broadcast, the series was received as a niche experiment in tone, ultimately remembered by enthusiasts as a charming, if unconventional, curiosity within the studio's extensive animation catalog.
