Aloof and logical middle school third-year Yuusuke Yotsuya is transported to a game-like alternate world. He becomes a third player and takes on a dangerous quest with his classmates Iu Shindo and Kusue Hakozaki, who were transported there earlier. The cold Yuusuke eschews emotionalism and examines all elements with detachment, sometimes even toying with the lives of his companions. Can he protect his party from attacking monsters, difficult incidents, and powerful scheming enemies and win the game?

Where it came from
I'm Standing on a Million Lives originated as a manga series written by Naoki Yamakoshi and illustrated by Akinari Nao, first serialized in 2016. The narrative subverts the tropes of the isekai genre by placing its protagonist, Yusuke Yotsuya, into a harsh, utilitarian quest system that prioritizes survival and strategic cooperation over traditional heroism. This unique premise attracted the attention of Maho Film, a relatively new animation studio, which sought to bring the series' gritty, non-linear approach to fantasy storytelling to television in 2020.
The animation production was helmed by director Kumiko Habara, who aimed to emphasize the stark contrast between the characters' mundane modern lives and the increasingly brutal challenges of the parallel world. While the series received mixed reviews regarding its technical animation quality, it garnered a dedicated following among fans of darker, more cynical takes on portal fantasy. The show is recognized for its commitment to the source material's focus on collective growth and the logistical burdens of quest-driven reality.
