Where it came from
Released in 2016, In This Corner of the World is an animated war drama directed by Sunao Katabuchi and produced by the studio MAPPA. It is based on the award-winning manga by Fumiyo Kouno, which chronicles the life of a young woman named Suzu living in Kure, Hiroshima, during the Second World War. The film was developed through a notable crowdfunding campaign, which reflected the public's desire to see Kouno's nuanced depiction of civilian life during wartime brought to the screen with historical fidelity.
Katabuchi’s direction focused on meticulous historical research, utilizing contemporary photographs and maps of Kure to reconstruct the environment as it existed in the 1940s. The art style consciously echoes the soft, hand-drawn aesthetic of the source manga to emphasize the domestic and human elements of the narrative. Upon release, the film received widespread critical acclaim for its gentle, empathetic storytelling and its ability to portray the stark realities of war without resorting to sensationalism, eventually winning the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Animation of the Year.
