In the final years of the Bakumatsu, wandering mercenary Yojiro Akizuki travels the length and breadth of Japan. And while he employs his sword in the usual fashion, he also uses it to help him locate supernatural items which he pursues with single-minded determination, often with bloody results. In the course of his quest, he crosses paths with a traveling theater group whose members have their own dark agenda. Is it a chance meeting or the result of some, as yet, undiscovered conspiracy?

Where it came from
Intrigue in the Bakumatsu: Irohanihoheto was produced by Sunrise and released in 2006 as a pioneering ONA, or original net animation, series. Directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, the project was designed to explore a serialized storytelling format specifically for internet distribution, setting it apart from traditional television broadcast models of the mid-2000s.
The series is set against the backdrop of the Bakumatsu period, blending historical drama with supernatural elements. The character designs were handled by Kayo Nagasawa, who aimed to evoke a distinct aesthetic reflective of the late Edo period while maintaining the fluid action sequences synonymous with the Sunrise studio style. Upon its release, it was noted for its experimental distribution method and its atmospheric take on historical fiction.
