Where it came from
Inferno Cop was produced by Studio Trigger and CoMix Wave Films in 2012 as a web series that deliberately embraced a low-budget, absurdist aesthetic. Developed in the immediate aftermath of Studio Trigger's founding by former Gainax animators, the project was designed as a parody of gritty police procedurals and tokusatsu tropes, utilizing a distinct 'limited animation' style where static images were moved across the screen rather than traditionally animated.
The series was directed by Akira Amemiya, who sought to challenge conventional animation standards by stripping back production values to their absolute minimum. Upon its release, it gained a cult following for its unpredictable storytelling and meta-humor, eventually becoming a foundational piece of Studio Trigger's identity. It is widely regarded as a significant example of how creative direction can successfully leverage technical constraints to produce a unique, self-aware comedic tone.
