Synopsis

This is the last time I’m going to practice…

Natsuki Enomoto, a third-year student at Sakuragaoka High School, has feelings of unrequited love for her childhood friend, Yuu Setoguchi. Unable to be true to her own feelings, Natsuki tells Yuu that she is merely using him as a stand-in to practice confessing her love to. As Natsuki continues to pretend not having any feelings for Yuu, her classmate Koyuki Ayase asks her out on a date. Will Natsuki ever be able to stop “practicing” and actually confess her love to Yuu?

Provenance

Where it came from

I've Always Liked You, known in Japan as Zutto Mae kara Suki deshita: Kokuhaku Jikkou Iinkai, was released in 2016 as the first feature film adaptation of the HoneyWorks vocaloid song project. Produced by Qualia Animation and directed by Tetsuya Yanagisawa, the film serves as a culmination of the Kokuhaku Jikkou Iinkai (Confession Executive Committee) series, which began as a collection of music videos and light novels centered on the romantic entanglements of high school students.

The film was designed to bridge the gap between the music videos and a cohesive narrative format, utilizing a bright, contemporary aesthetic characteristic of modern school-life anime. The character designs by Maki Fujii were intended to mirror the original illustrations associated with the HoneyWorks tracks, ensuring continuity for the established fan base. Upon its release, the film was received as a straightforward, earnest exploration of adolescent romance, praised primarily for its emotional accessibility and integration of the source music.
