Iwakakeru -Sport Climbing Girls-

Iwakakeru -Sport Climbing Girls- was produced by Studio BLADE and aired as a television series in 2020, based on the manga series by Ryūdai Ishizaka. The project emerged during a period of growing international interest in competitive sport climbing, specifically surrounding its inclusion as an official event in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The series was designed to introduce the technical nuances and strategic intensity of bouldering and speed climbing to a broader audience through the lens of a high school sports club setting.

The character designs and animation approach focused on blending the physical demands of climbing with the conventions of the sports anime genre, emphasizing core engagement and the geometry of climbing routes. While the series received attention for its specific niche subject matter, critical reception was mixed, with some viewers appreciating the educational focus on climbing terminology and techniques, while others noted the stylistic choices typical of the medium at the time. It remains a notable example of late-2010s anime efforts to spotlight emerging Olympic sports.
