Jim Button

Jim Button, known in its original German as Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer, was produced by the Japanese studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha—often associated with Ichigo Animation in later licensing contexts—in 1974. The series serves as an animated adaptation of Michael Ende’s beloved 1960 children’s novel, which tells the whimsical story of a young boy named Jim and his friend Lukas, who travel the world aboard a sentient locomotive named Emma. The adaptation sought to capture the imaginative, seafaring charm of Ende's literature while utilizing the distinct visual storytelling techniques characteristic of mid-1970s Japanese television animation.

The character design and visual direction were crafted to translate Ende's fantastical island setting, Lummerland, into a vibrant animated format. While the series holds a place in the history of international co-productions and literary adaptations, its reception was centered on its departure from the source material’s more contemplative tone in favor of episodic, adventure-driven narratives. It remains a notable example of the period's cross-cultural creative exchange, reflecting the era's ambition to bring European literary classics to a wider global audience through the medium of cel animation.
