Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye. She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. But soon they realize no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.

Where it came from
The 2018 Junji Ito Collection, which includes the Tomie episodes, was produced by Studio DEEN as an anthology series intended to translate the surreal, unsettling aesthetic of Junji Ito's manga into an animated format. The project was conceived as a celebration of Ito’s long-standing influence on the horror genre, focusing on adapting fan-favorite stories that capture his signature themes of body horror, paranoia, and the grotesque.
The adaptation of the Tomie character required the production team to balance the minimalist, stark line work of the original manga with the motion requirements of animation. Tomie, Ito's debut work, features an immortal and manipulative woman who drives those around her to madness; the animation design aimed to retain her iconic, shifting appearance while maintaining the eerie, quiet atmosphere of the source material. Upon release, the collection received mixed feedback from fans who scrutinized how well the limited animation style captured the intricate detail of Ito’s printed panels.
