Where it came from
The Junji Ito Collection was produced in 2018 by Studio DEEN as a television anime anthology series aimed at bringing the surreal, body-horror aesthetic of Junji Ito's manga to the screen. The production was intended to celebrate Ito's decades-long influence on the horror genre, selecting a variety of stories from his vast bibliography, including the 'Tomie' and 'Soichi' series, to showcase the unique dread and grotesque imagery that define his work.
Directed by Shinobu Tagashira, who also handled character design, the series attempted to translate Ito's intricate, high-contrast ink work into a motion format. While the project was highly anticipated by horror enthusiasts due to the source material's cult status, it received a polarized reception upon release. Many critics and fans noted that the animation style struggled to fully capture the atmospheric tension and disturbing detail found in Ito's original illustrations, though it remains a notable effort to adapt his signature style for a wider audience.
