JUNI TAISEN：ZODIAC WAR

Juni Taisen: Zodiac War originated as a light novel written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Hikaru Nakamura, later adapted into a 12-episode anime series by Studio Graphinica in 2017. The project emerged from a desire to combine the high-stakes tropes of battle royale storytelling with the intricate, cyclical nature of the Chinese zodiac. The narrative follows twelve warriors representing the signs of the zodiac who must fight to the death to secure a single wish.

The production sought to balance visceral combat with psychological depth, with character designs by Ryosuke Okazaki reflecting the distinct personalities and animal motifs associated with each sign. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unconventional pacing and structural focus on individual backstories, which prioritized character-driven tragedy over simple kinetic action sequences. It remains a notable example of the studio's attempt to elevate standard genre conventions through stylized visual direction.
