Where it came from
Kaitei Daisensou: Ai no 20,000 Miles was produced by Tatsunoko Production in 1981 as a standalone television special. Coming out of an era when the studio was experimenting with feature-length animated projects to bolster their established reputation for science fiction and adventure, this production sought to capitalize on the enduring popularity of Jules Verne-inspired maritime exploration themes.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to align with the house style of Tatsunoko, characterized by clean lines and an emphasis on heroic, high-stakes narratives. While the special did not attain the massive cultural footprint of the studio's flagship series like Gatchaman, it remains a notable example of the studio's mid-career output, appreciated by enthusiasts of early 1980s Japanese animation for its ambitious world-building and character-driven focus.
