Kaitei Sanman Mile

Kaitei Sanman Mile, released in 1970, stands as a notable entry in Toei Animation's early history, representing the studio's interest in adapting classic literature into the animated feature format. The film draws its primary inspiration from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, reinterpreting the iconic narrative for a younger Japanese audience during a period when Toei was actively expanding its catalog of feature-length animation.

The production reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Toei's late 1960s and early 1970s house style, characterized by traditional cel animation techniques and a focus on grand adventure. While the film is often regarded as a secondary work within the studio’s extensive library, it provides a fascinating look at how mid-century animators approached the visual challenges of underwater exploration and sci-fi technology, prioritizing character-driven storytelling over the technical complexity found in later science fiction works.
