Kaitei Toshi no Dekiru made

Kaitei Toshi no Dekiru made, or How an Undersea City is Built, was produced by Mushi Production in 1969. The film serves as a notable example of Osamu Tezuka’s efforts to blend educational content with the imaginative, futuristic aesthetic that defined his studio’s work during the late 1960s. It was conceived as an informational short, designed to explain complex engineering and urban planning concepts through the approachable lens of animation.

The production reflects the mid-century Japanese fascination with technological progress and the exploration of untapped frontiers like the ocean floor. By utilizing Mushi Production’s signature style, the creators aimed to make technical infrastructure understandable for younger audiences. The work is regarded by animation historians as a testament to Tezuka’s desire to use the medium of anime not just for entertainment, but as a pedagogical tool for visualizing a rapidly modernizing world.
