Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss, or Kamisama Hajimemashita, originated as a manga series by Julietta Suzuki before being adapted into a 2012 television anime produced by TMS Entertainment and broadcast by TV Tokyo. The narrative follows Nanami Momozono, a girl who finds herself unexpectedly installed as a local deity after encountering a displaced earth deity, leading her into the complex world of Shinto folklore and spirits. The series emerged during a period of sustained popularity for the shojo supernatural subgenre, blending romantic comedy with traditional Japanese mythology.

The character designs and animation style were crafted to retain the whimsical yet heartfelt aesthetic of Suzuki’s original artwork, emphasizing the juxtaposition between Nanami's mundane high school life and the divine tasks of the Mikage Shrine. Akitaro Daichi directed the series, aiming to capture a lighthearted, character-driven tone that balanced the supernatural elements with interpersonal dynamics. Upon its release, the show was well-received for its charming protagonist and the engaging chemistry between the human Nanami and her fox-familiar, Tomoe, securing its status as a staple of early 2010s shojo anime.
