Kedamono Damono

Kedamono Damono is a manga series created by the artist Miki Tori, first serialized in the late 1980s. Published during a period when gag manga and surreal humor were gaining traction in Japan, the work is noted for its absurd, deadpan style that contrasts sharply with mainstream shonen titles of the era. Miki Tori, already recognized for his penchant for subverting narrative tropes, utilized the series to explore the mundane lives of bizarre creatures living among humans, reflecting a satirical take on contemporary Japanese social anxieties.

The character designs in Kedamono Damono are characterized by clean lines and an intentionally off-kilter aesthetic, hallmarks of Tori's minimalist approach to comedy. The work was well-received by critics for its intellectual wit and unconventional pacing, earning the author the Bungeishunju Manga Award in 1994. By eschewing typical dramatic arcs in favor of episodic, disconnected humor, the series established Tori as a pivotal figure in the post-modern movement of the manga industry.
