KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

The Keep Calm and Carry On poster was designed in 1939 by the British Ministry of Information at the onset of the Second World War. It was intended as one of three motivational placards meant to be displayed throughout the United Kingdom to maintain civilian morale in the event of a catastrophic enemy invasion. While two other designs—proclaiming 'Freedom is in Peril' and 'Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory'—were widely distributed and plastered across the country, this specific design was held in reserve, intended for use only during a dire national crisis that ultimately did not occur in the manner anticipated.

The design is defined by its stark, utilitarian minimalism, featuring a bold, serif typeface and the iconic Tudor crown of King George VI against a solid, somber background. It remained largely forgotten in government archives for decades until a copy was rediscovered in 2000 in a secondhand bookstore in Northumberland. Its emergence into the public consciousness during the early 21st century transformed it from an obscure piece of wartime ephemera into a ubiquitous cultural artifact, celebrated for its Stoic simplicity and adaptable message of resilience in an uncertain age.
