Where it came from
Kennosuke-sama was released as an original video animation in 1990, produced by Toei Animation. It emerged during a period when the Japanese animation industry was heavily investing in the direct-to-video market, allowing studios to experiment with shorter, self-contained narratives that did not require the commitment of a full television series or a theatrical feature.
The animation centers on the supernatural adventures of a young boy and his comedic encounters with a spectral protagonist. The design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of early 1990s character animation, prioritizing expressive, fluid movement and the whimsical, lighthearted tone characteristic of Toei's family-oriented projects from that era. While it did not achieve mainstream international notoriety, it remains a notable example of the era's focus on standalone, supernatural folklore-inspired storytelling.
