Kenya Boy

Kenya Boy, also known as Kenya Shonen, was released in 1984 as a feature-length animated film produced by Toei Animation. It is based on the manga series of the same name by George Akiyama, which originally serialized in the early 1970s. The film follows the journey of a young Japanese boy named Wataru who finds himself in the middle of a struggle for the future of humanity in the African wilderness, incorporating elements of mysticism and adventure that were hallmarks of Akiyama's storytelling.

The film's visual direction reflects the transition period of 1980s anime, utilizing a mix of traditional cel animation and ambitious production values characteristic of Toei's feature projects of that era. Nobutaka Nishizawa directed the film, aiming to capture the intense, often psychedelic tone of the source material. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from the more lighthearted animated content of the time, earning a reputation among cult film enthusiasts for its dark narrative themes and unique character designs.
