Where it came from
Kentoushi, or 'Ken of the Envoy,' was released in 1990 as an original video animation produced by the animation studio Magic Bus. The work was created during a period in the late 1980s and early 1990s when the OVA market in Japan was expanding rapidly, allowing for the production of niche historical and experimental projects that might not have secured a theatrical or television broadcast release.
The animation focuses on the historical narrative of the Kentoushi, the Japanese missions to Tang China, which were pivotal for the transmission of Buddhism, art, and administrative systems to Japan. The character designs and visual approach reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of independent animation studios of the era, prioritizing atmospheric storytelling and historical dramatization over the high-octane action typical of more commercial titles from the same period.
