Where it came from
Released in 2011, Kiseki—internationally titled I Wish—was written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The film was commissioned by the Kyushu Shinkansen to commemorate the opening of the full line, but Kore-eda was given creative freedom to craft a personal story. He chose to focus on two young brothers separated by divorce who attempt to reunite their family by wishing upon a new high-speed train, grounding the commercial premise in his signature style of gentle, humanistic realism.
The film's visual identity relies on naturalistic cinematography and the unscripted, improvised chemistry of real-life brothers Koki and Oshiro Maeda. Kore-eda sought to capture the fleeting, specific wonder of childhood perspectives on adult dilemmas. Upon its debut, the film was widely praised by critics for its warmth and narrative restraint, further cementing Kore-eda’s reputation as a master of contemporary Japanese family drama.
