Kuma no Gakkou: Jackie to Katie

Kuma no Gakkou: Jackie to Katie, released in 2010 by Toho, is a cinematic adaptation of the popular Japanese children's picture book series The Bears' School. Created by author Hiroyuki Aihara and illustrator Nami Adachi, the franchise focuses on the daily adventures of a large family of twelve bear siblings, with Jackie being the youngest and most spirited member. The film was produced to expand the reach of the franchise beyond the printed page, bringing the gentle, watercolor-inspired aesthetic of the original books to the screen.

The animation style was meticulously crafted to preserve Nami Adachi’s distinctive, soft-toned artistic touch, which emphasizes a sense of warmth and pastoral simplicity. Directed by Masahiro Sonoda, the film explores the theme of sibling bonds through the introduction of a new character, Katie, who tests Jackie's maturity. Upon its release, the film was well-received by its target audience of young children and their parents, cementing the franchise's status as a staple of contemporary Japanese children's media.
