Where it came from
Released in 2017, Kuma no Gakkou: Patissier Jackie to Ohisama no Sweets represents a cinematic entry in the long-running Kuma no Gakkou, or The Bears' School, franchise. Originating from a popular series of Japanese picture books created by author Hiroyuki Aida and illustrator Nami Adachi, the property follows the daily lives of twelve bears who live in a boarding school. This film was produced by Toho to expand the whimsical world of Jackie, the youngest and most spirited bear, into a feature-length narrative focused on her culinary aspirations.
The film maintains the soft, hand-drawn aesthetic that defined Adachi’s original picture books, prioritizing a gentle tone suited for younger audiences. The production aimed to preserve the tactile, watercolor-like charm of the print material while utilizing animation to explore Jackie's dream of becoming a pastry chef. Upon its release, the project was received as a faithful continuation of the franchise's ethos, praised for its soothing visual style and its focus on themes of friendship and perseverance.
