Toei Animation announced the new movie based on the classic Anime and Manga. Toei Animation previewed pilot footage of the film at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in January 2007, but has yet to make an official announcement of its release date in Japan. This project is most likely cancelled and a trailer is all that remains.

Where it came from
La Rose de Versailles, also known as The Rose of Versailles, originated as a seminal 1972 manga series by Riyoko Ikeda. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the story follows Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to serve in the Royal Guard. The material was adapted into a 1990 live-action film directed by Jacques Demy, which sought to translate the operatic drama and romanticism of the original manga into a cinematic format through an international co-production.
The 1990 film adaptation is noted for its unconventional aesthetic, which diverges from the typical anime style to embrace a European art-house sensibility. While the film encountered mixed reception among fans of Ikeda's original work due to these stylistic shifts and language barriers, it remains a significant cultural artifact. It stands as an ambitious attempt to bridge Japanese shojo manga sensibilities with classic French historical filmmaking, reflecting the global fascination with the intersection of history and melodrama.
