Lupin, the master thief/spy/Jack of all Trades, has been executed, but he is still alive, and not even Lupin himself knows how that is possible. While trying to figure out, however, he and his gang are thrust into a conspiracy involving clones, Lupin's un-trustworthy rival Fujiko, and a miniature madman's plot to take over the world.

Where it came from
Released in 1978, Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo was the first feature-length theatrical film for the iconic gentleman thief created by Monkey Punch. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by Soji Yoshikawa, the film was conceived to capitalize on the massive success of the second television series. It leaned into a darker, more surreal aesthetic that diverged from the lighter tone of the series, incorporating science fiction elements and a philosophical antagonist that challenged Lupin’s identity as a master thief.
The film's visual identity is marked by its experimental animation style and distinct character designs, which remained closer to Monkey Punch's original manga aesthetic than the TV adaptations of the era. Upon its release, it garnered a complex reception for its jarring shifts in tone and psychedelic narrative structure. Despite—or perhaps because of—this unconventional approach, it has since become a cult classic, celebrated for its unique atmosphere and its significance as a foundational piece of Lupin III cinematic history.
