Where it came from
Released in 2002 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original Lupin III television anime, Return of Pycal serves as a direct reimagining of the early series. It revives the character of Pycal, a magician and assassin who originally appeared in the show's very first episode, updating the narrative to fit a more contemporary production style while retaining the heist-driven antics central to the franchise.
The OVA was produced by the studio TMS Entertainment and released under the VAP label. The project sought to blend modern digital animation techniques with the retro aesthetics of the 1971 series. While it received a modest reception, it is noted by fans for its effort to provide a definitive closure to one of the series' earliest antagonists, reflecting a broader trend in Japanese animation during the early 2000s of revisiting legacy properties for a new generation of viewers.
