Where it came from
Lupin III: Prison of the Past was produced by TMS Entertainment as a feature-length television special in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Monkey Punch’s original manga. The production sought to celebrate the legacy of the franchise by returning to the classic, high-stakes heist structure that defined the series, while integrating the updated aesthetic sensibilities established during the franchise's later iterations.
Directed by Hatsuki Tsuji, the film focuses on Lupin’s attempt to infiltrate the Kingdom of Doruente to rescue a master thief. The design direction favored a balance between the character's traditional appearance and modern animation fluidity, receiving moderate praise from the fanbase for its nostalgic tone and focus on the core dynamics of the Lupin gang during a year of significant celebration for the studio.
