Where it came from
Lupin III: The First was released in 2019 by TMS Entertainment as the first feature-length 3D computer-animated film in the long-running Lupin III franchise. Directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki, the production marked a significant departure from the series' traditional hand-drawn aesthetic, aiming to translate Monkey Punch’s iconic character designs into a high-fidelity digital space while retaining the kinetic energy and charm associated with the Lupin brand.
The film follows Lupin and his associates as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary, a mysterious artifact that even Lupin’s grandfather could not decipher. Upon its release, the film was noted for its technical achievement in capturing the expressive, fluid movements of the original anime within a 3D environment. It received a warm reception from both longtime fans and critics, who praised its ability to modernize the franchise's visual language without sacrificing its familiar, swashbuckling spirit.
