Where it came from
Released in 2007, The Elusiveness of the Fog was produced by TMS Entertainment as a feature-length special commemorating the 40th anniversary of the original Lupin the 3rd manga by Monkey Punch. The narrative serves as a direct sequel to the 1978 television special Lupin the 3rd: The Mystery of Mamo, revisiting the iconic antagonist Kyosuke Mamo. The production sought to celebrate the franchise's legacy by blending classic elements of the series with modern animation sensibilities that had evolved since the character's television debut.
The film's visual identity remains rooted in the traditional aesthetic established by long-standing staff at TMS, aiming for a balance between the gritty, comedic caper style of the early entries and the polished production standards of the 2000s. While it was received by long-term fans as a nostalgic tribute to the franchise's foundations, it is noted for its ambitious plot involving time travel and the reappearance of a legacy villain, which highlighted the studio's attempt to bridge the gap between decades of Lupin lore.
