Where it came from
Lupin the 3rd: The Fuma Conspiracy was released in 1987 as a theatrical film production by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. It arrived during a transitional period for the franchise, intended as a standalone feature that experimented with a different voice cast and a more streamlined animation style compared to the earlier series and the landmark film The Castle of Cagliostro.
The film was directed by Masayuki Ozeki and features character designs by the legendary Yasuo Otsuka, who sought to refine the aesthetic of Monkey Punch's original manga characters for a cinematic format. While the film was initially met with mixed reactions from fans due to the unconventional cast changes, it has since become a noted entry in the Lupin canon, recognized for its high-energy action sequences and its faithful adherence to the franchise's classic caper-driven roots.
