The adventurous, treasure-loving master thief Lupin the Third is at it again. This time, Lupin’s after the long-lost Gold of Babylon! With the aid of his partners Jigen and Goemon, Lupin treks the globe unraveling clues and dodging the violent New York Mafia, all while escaping the cuffs of the tenacious Interpol Inspector Zenigata and his team of five beautiful and determined policewomen. But what does the enigmatic and flirtatious old booze hound named Rosetta have to do with the fabled Babylonian gold deposit? Co-directed by the cult favorite film director Seijun Suzuki and matched with Yuji Ohno’s infectious breed of jazz, this animated romp is a bizarre and colorful adventure that whisks viewers from New York to the Middle East (and back!) in search of a fabulous treasure inspired by the biblical Tower of Babel.

Where it came from
Released in 1985 by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, The Legend of the Gold of Babylon was the third feature film in the long-running Lupin the 3rd franchise. It was produced during a transitional period for the series, aiming to capture the adventurous, globe-trotting spirit of the original Monkey Punch manga while experimenting with a more surreal and ambitious narrative scope that moved away from the grounded tone of earlier entries like The Castle of Cagliostro.
The film's design and direction were heavily influenced by the creative vision of Seijun Suzuki and Shigetsugu Yoshida, who sought to blend the classic heist aesthetic with a heightened, dreamlike atmosphere. The production was notable for its distinct visual style and eccentric character interactions, though it received mixed critical reception at the time for its disjointed plot compared to the more focused storytelling of its predecessors.
