Lupin the 3rd: The Secret Page of Marco Polo

Released in 2012 by TMS Entertainment, The Secret Page of Marco Polo stands as the twenty-fourth television special in the long-running Lupin the 3rd franchise. It was produced during a significant transitional period for the series, following the studio's initiative to modernize the animation style and character designs while maintaining the playful, heist-oriented spirit established by Monkey Punch’s original manga. The special focuses on Lupin and his crew pursuing the titular artifact, which is said to lead to a hidden treasure, leaning into the globe-trotting adventure trope central to the series' identity.

The animation direction for this project was overseen by Hidetoshi Namiki, who worked to balance contemporary aesthetics with the classic expressions defined by decades of television history. The narrative design adopts the high-stakes caper format, emphasizing the dynamic interplay between Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko. Upon its broadcast in Japan, it was received as a standard addition to the canon, recognized primarily for its contribution to the enduring legacy of the franchise's annual special format, which serves to introduce the legendary gentleman thief to new generations of viewers.
