Where it came from
Released in 1995 as the seventh installment in the annual Lupin III television special series, The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure was produced by TMS Entertainment. The narrative centers on Lupin’s quest to recover a fortune hidden by the legendary thief Harimao, drawing on themes of historical treasure hunting and World War II intrigue. This special is notable for its role in maintaining the franchise's momentum during the mid-nineties, balancing the classic comedic heist formula with a slightly more globe-trotting, adventurous tone characteristic of the era's TV specials.
The production captures the quintessential aesthetic established in the franchise’s earlier high-definition transitions, featuring character designs that align with the refined, sharp-edged look popular in the nineties. Directed by Osamu Dezaki, the special benefited from his signature directorial flair, which often employed dramatic lighting and painterly transitions known as 'postcard memories.' While the series has always enjoyed a dedicated following, this specific entry was received as a solid, traditional entry that solidified the studio’s commitment to consistent, high-quality animation for the long-running Lupin legacy.
